Dymocks, an Australian tutoring company, is shutting down five of its centers in Sydney due to challenges posed by artificial intelligence. According to company director Mark Buckland, the rise of AI has rendered the traditional tutoring business model unsustainable. Buckland candidly remarks that many customers might find it more beneficial to invest their money in more affordable alternatives rather than paying high fees for tutoring services. An AI subscription typically costs between $20 and $30 monthly, whereas hiring a human tutor can amount to several hundred dollars per subject each term. While Dymocks maintains that a human instructor offers a superior educational experience compared to AI, many families no longer see the value in paying extra for that difference. Moreover, students themselves are increasingly opting for AI-assisted tutoring. In the United States, the percentage of high school and college students utilizing AI for homework support jumped from 48% to 62% in just seven months, between May and December 2025. Dymocks seems to be one of the pioneers acknowledging the significant shifts occurring in the education landscape. Will AI fully replace human tutors? The debate continues, with opinions divided.
