Siberian State Medical University is partnering with ITMO University to develop a groundbreaking educational program aimed at training a new generation of specialists in the intersection of healthcare and artificial intelligence. Starting in September 2026, the medical and biological faculty will launch a module titled "Artificial Intelligence Technologies for Addressing Healthcare Challenges." This collaboration marks a significant step in integrating advanced medical knowledge with cutting-edge AI competencies, addressing a critical shortage of cybernetic doctors in the healthcare sector.
The new educational module is part of the strategic development plan for the medical and biological faculty under the "Priority-2030" program. The faculty is actively enhancing its technological capabilities, adopting modern educational formats, and emphasizing the importance of equipping future doctors with skills in artificial intelligence and other digital tools. Students will learn to handle big data, apply machine learning algorithms in clinical settings, and utilize advanced technologies for diagnostics and treatment, shaping the future of medicine.
The AI technologies module will be delivered in a network format, connecting the medical and biological faculty of Siberian Medical University with ITMO's Mega Faculty of Translational Information Technologies and the "Artificial Intelligence" educational center. It is specifically designed for fifth-year students majoring in medical cybernetics.
According to Yulia Kolobovnikova, the dean of the medical and biological faculty, the development of this program is a timely response to the pressing need for healthcare professionals who not only understand human physiology but are also proficient in the mathematical algorithms underlying innovative medical devices and software. The choice of ITMO University as a strategic partner is intentional, given its status as a leader in information and photonic technologies in Russia and its global academic reputation. This partnership will provide students with access to top-tier expertise in Data Science and AI.
Throughout the course, students will engage with a broad range of topics, including the application of AI in medicine, modeling AI for medical tasks, the role of generative AI and large language models in healthcare, and the principles behind decision support systems for clinicians. They'll also learn to analyze medical data for diagnostics and personalized medicine.

The module is part of a project initiated by the Ministry of Digital Development and aims to share best practices in AI education with universities that teach applied technologies across various sectors.
