Scouts Introduce AI Badges to Modernize Explorer Program

The UK Scout Association is revamping its Explorer Scouts program aimed at teenagers aged 14 to 18 by incorporating new badges focused on artificial intelligence, digital communication, content creation, and online safety. This marks the first significant update for this program in almost 25 years. To qualify for the newly introduced badges, scouts will need to grasp how digitalization influences public opinion, understand the concept of digital footprints, learn about the mechanics of online campaigns, and acquire skills to safeguard themselves in the digital realm. The organization emphasizes that survival skills in today's world extend beyond traditional tasks like "starting a fire" to include the ability to identify manipulation through algorithms, deepfakes, and social media. "These new badges are more pertinent to modern life than the conventional ones focused on camping and fire-making," stated 17-year-old scout Elie Mondah. The initiative also maintains the spirit of adventure, as the updated program offers 40 new and revised badges for a total of 50,000 participants. Will knowledge of AI be useful in the wilderness? A scout needs to be prepared for anything!
