Researchers in Japan have successfully created mice with both parents being clones of a single male. In this unique experiment, one clone was kept as a male while the other was transformed into a female. The scientists utilized a CRISPR-Cas9 technique named Y-CUT, which effectively eliminates the Y chromosome during the very initial stages of embryonic development. This innovative method damages the essential portion of the Y chromosome required for its proper transmission during cell division, leading to its eventual loss as it fails to integrate into the new nucleus. Consequently, the resulting embryo is left with only one X chromosome and develops as a female. Following this, the team combined the Y-CUT approach with somatic cell nuclear transfer—the cloning technique—to create both male and female clones from the original male cells. These cloned mice matured and eventually produced offspring. The researchers believe that this groundbreaking "dual-sex cloning" technique could play a significant role in conserving endangered species, particularly when genetic material is scarce. However, it's important to note that thus far, this method has only been applied in mice. While female mice with a single X chromosome can generally be both healthy and fertile, this does not hold true for most other mammals. In humans, for instance, possessing only one X chromosome can lead to Turner syndrome, which is often linked to infertility.
