Russian Hackers Use AI to Target Ukraine and Steal Military Drone Technology

A hacker group known as Midnight Blizzard, linked to Russian intelligence, has launched a cyber espionage campaign against over 20 Ukrainian and European entities, including government agencies, defense firms, and embassies, utilizing AI agents named Claude. The hackers leveraged AI to streamline their operations, automating reconnaissance, phishing, and system breaches. In Ukraine, they successfully extracted sensitive information from military drone manufacturers, which included software development kits for computer vision systems and firmware for drone operation. The AI agents also played a crucial role in processing hundreds of gigabytes of stolen data and autonomously modifying malicious software to evade detection by security systems. In response to the attacks, Anthropic has suspended accounts related to the incidents and alerted authorities. The company regards this as one of the most significant instances of AI being employed for cyber espionage.
