Julie Eli, a biologist from California, has dedicated over a decade to recording and analyzing the vocalizations of zebra finches through the use of machine learning techniques. These small, sociable songbirds, native to Australia, are known for their vibrant feathers and unique "squeaky" calls. In an experimental setup, the birds were exposed to various calls from their collection as they pressed a button, receiving seeds for specific calls. With time, they learned to ignore calls that did not yield rewards. Eli notes that this behavior resembles how people interact with videos on social media platforms. "Their reactions showed an understanding of the meanings behind their different call types," Eli stated. The scientist successfully identified 11 primary calls within the zebra finches' "vocabulary" and uncovered their meanings. It was discovered that these birds express their identities, activities, and can recognize each other by their vocalizations. Additionally, zebra finches have the remarkable ability to differentiate the calls of over 40 other birds in their group after only a few exposures, a skill that, apart from humans, is generally found in specially trained dogs. Researchers from the Earth Species Project, an independent initiative, are optimistic that by 2030, advancements in artificial intelligence will enable the interpretation of animal languages across various species.
