A study has revealed that children raised on farms experience significantly lower incidences of asthma, allergies, and hay fever. Scientists have long theorized that this phenomenon, known as the "farm effect," results from the exposure to a diverse array of microbes that help to "train" the immune system. The team analyzed bacterial samples taken from the mattresses of over 1,000 children living in rural Germany.
Their findings highlighted nine specific types of bacteria originating from the digestive systems of cows, which seem to account for approximately two-thirds of the farm effect related to asthma and around half of the protective influence against hay fever and eczema. These bacteria release compounds that become airborne in barns, allowing them to be inhaled into the lungs, where they interact with the body’s receptors. This process is believed to help regulate excessive inflammation, thereby lowering the risks associated with asthma and allergies.
