Nvidia has announced a significant investment of $1.5 billion in SB Energy to support the construction of the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Pike County, Ohio. This ambitious project will provide a total of 8 IT gigawatts (IT-GW) of computing power, with the initial 4.25 GW allocated for OpenAI. Nvidia has secured an option for an additional 3.75 GW, solidifying its role as the exclusive supplier of computing infrastructure for the AI company, which will lease the facility under a 20-year agreement.
SB Energy will take charge of building, owning, and managing the data center. Nvidia's involvement goes beyond just supplying equipment; the company is also investing in SB Energy and assisting with the development of land, energy supply, and the physical structures of the data center. The facility will utilize Nvidia's DSX platform, integrating graphics and central processors, networking equipment, software, and the infrastructure of the campus itself.
To ensure the 8 IT-GW of computing capacity, SB Energy and SoftBank plan to generate at least 10 GW of new power sources. The campus is expected to be phased into operation starting in 2028. Furthermore, OpenAI has committed to contributing an additional $40 million to an existing community support fund of the same amount.
Nvidia has indicated that the timeline, scale, and launch of the campus will be influenced by various factors, including connections to the power grid, construction of generating facilities, building infrastructure, cooling systems, and the commissioning of equipment.
