The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to researchers Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel for their groundbreaking discoveries related to light-sensitive ion channels and the field of optogenetics. This innovative technique allows scientists to explore how nerve cells contribute to memory formation, emotions, and behavior in real time within a living brain. According to the press release, "Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel identified a remarkable protein called channelrhodopsin in a single-celled alga, while Karl Deisseroth transformed this protein into a light-regulated switch for nerve cells. Together, these laureates have established a new frontier in neuroscience." Neurons transmit signals via electrical impulses, and channelrhodopsin has the capability to initiate these impulses: when exposed to blue light, it opens a channel in the cell membrane, allowing charged particles to flow in. By introducing the gene for this protein into specific types of neurons, researchers can activate them using a thin optical fiber with millisecond accuracy, enabling them to observe changes in animal behavior. Through this method, scientists have discovered the neurons that rouse a sleeping mouse, pinpointed locations of specific memories, and identified the neural circuits linked to anxiety. This technique is already being applied in medical settings; for instance, several years ago, a patient suffering from retinitis pigmentosa, who was blind, received a gene for a light-sensitive protein in his retinal cells. With the aid of specialized glasses, he was able to start recognizing objects on a table. Peter Hegemann, aged 71, and Georg Nagel, 73, are both based in Germany, with Hegemann at Humboldt University of Berlin and Nagel at the University of Würzburg. They described channelrhodopsin in the early 2000s while studying how the alga Chlamydomonas senses light and moves towards it. Karl Deisseroth, 54, trained as a psychiatrist and is now a professor of bioengineering in the United States.
