Nissan to Cut Model Lineup by 25% and Focus on AI Technology

In a bold move to revitalize its struggling brand, Nissan has announced plans to reduce its global vehicle lineup from over 60 models to approximately 45. The decision, revealed by CEO Ivan Espinosa during a presentation at the company's headquarters in Yokohama, aims to phase out less popular models, including the Versa, in order to concentrate resources on more successful vehicles and advanced technologies.

The strategy, part of Nissan's Vision initiative, emphasizes that around 80% of sales will come from core models such as the Qashqai and X-Trail, along with various popular crossovers and SUVs. The remaining models will include flagship vehicles like the Xterra and the globally recognized Juke, as well as other collaborative projects.

Nissan is targeting a 30% increase in average sales per model, with ambitious goals of selling over 1 million vehicles in the United States and Canada, and 550,000 in Japan by the year 2030. To support these objectives, the company plans to invest heavily in artificial intelligence and hybrid technology, leveraging its AI Drive Technology (AIDT) to enhance driver-assistance systems like ProPilot.

Long-term plans include equipping 90% of its model lineup with semi-autonomous driving capabilities, starting with the Elgrand minivan in Japan, which is set to receive a refreshed version later this year. The introduction of AI-supported ProPilot technology is expected by 2027.

Despite being slower than competitors in adopting hybrid technologies, Nissan is committed to turning the tide. The recent unveiling of the global version of the 2027 X-Trail, known as the Rogue Hybrid in North America, showcases their new third-generation E-Power hybrid system, alongside the return of the Nissan Xterra.

This strategic shift reflects Nissan's intent to streamline its offerings and enhance competitiveness in an evolving automotive market, potentially reshaping its position against rivals in both hybrid and AI-driven vehicle segments.
