New AI System Monitors Inmate Communications

Securus Technologies is introducing an automated system designed to scrutinize phone calls and written correspondence of inmates in both prisons and migrant detention facilities. Portions of these communications that raise concerns are subsequently examined by staff members. If any breaches are identified, inmates could face disciplinary measures or potentially new legal charges. Kevin Elder, the President of Securus Technologies, remarked, "We can direct that large language model at a vast array of data to recognize and comprehend when criminal thoughts are being considered, enabling us to intervene much earlier in the process." The company asserts that it has been effective in disrupting gang activities but declines to disclose specific instances due to confidentiality. In contrast, advocates for civil rights highlight the potential dangers regarding attorney-client confidentiality and the risk of racial bias in speech recognition, which could result in wrongful accusations. "This is coercive consent; there is virtually no alternative for inmates to communicate with their families. It’s not just the individuals incarcerated. The voices of countless children are being recorded as they attempt to speak with their parents. This system collects biometric information for governmental use," stated Bianca Tylek, Director of Worth Rises.
