Korean Researchers Develop Rings That Convert Sign Language to Text

A team of scientists from South Korea has innovatively created rings that can translate sign language into written text. The system utilizes seven wireless rings worn on the fingers, which monitor hand movements and transform gestures into text with a minimal delay of only 0.1 to 0.3 seconds. Each ring is equipped with an accelerometer, a magnet, and a Bluetooth module, enabling seamless connectivity to smartphones or personal computers. The absence of wires allows for unrestricted hand movement. The translation system has been trained on a vocabulary of 100 words from American Sign Language and 100 from International Sign Language. Testing has shown impressive recognition accuracy rates of 88.3% and 88.5% respectively, achieved without requiring any calibration from the user. Currently in the prototype stage, there are plans to adapt this technology for applications in virtual reality, touchless control interfaces, or rehabilitation following injuries.
