Enthusiasts from Squeez Labs have introduced CrankGPT, a groundbreaking device that operates independently of network connections and power sources. This innovative gadget resembles a modern-day music box; however, instead of playing a tune when its handle is turned, it generates text, images, and even code through an integrated artificial intelligence system.
At the heart of CrankGPT lies a standard Raspberry Pi 5 board paired with 8 GB of RAM. It runs on the DietPi operating system, while a manual 20-watt generator with a battery and voltage rectifier provides power. The processor is capable of recognizing user voice commands locally, synthesizing text into speech, and executing a language model.
CrankGPT is particularly remarkable for its utilization of the Liquid AI LFM2 model, which boasts 350 and 1200 million parameters, along with the Gemma 3 model featuring 1 billion parameters accessed through llama.cpp. As a result, the device can provide voice responses, generate small images, and even create what the developers describe as "terrible poetry," along with programming capabilities.
While Squeez Labs has not yet disclosed when CrankGPT will be available for purchase, a demo version of the working prototype can be found on the startup's official website.
