Hongqi has introduced a revolutionary battery that can charge an electric vehicle from 10% to 70% in just 3 minutes and 41 seconds, rivaling traditional gasoline refueling times. Additionally, the battery can reach 97% charge in a mere eight minutes. If this technology is implemented in mass-produced electric vehicles, it has the potential to outpace current fast-charging solutions offered by competitors like BYD.
Developed in collaboration with China Automotive New Energy Battery Technology (CNET), this cutting-edge battery utilizes an advanced electrolyte with reduced resistance and a composite carbon-coated anode. This innovation has allowed engineers to lower the internal resistance of the battery cells by approximately 15%.
One significant challenge with ultra-fast charging is the risk of overheating. To mitigate this issue, Hongqi has designed an adaptive liquid cooling system that monitors the battery's temperature in real-time, adjusting the charging power to maintain safe thermal conditions. During testing at an ambient temperature of 25 °C, the temperature variation among individual cells was limited to just 3 °C.
In comparison, BYD's second-generation Blade battery, which is currently in use in its electric vehicles, charges from 10% to 70% in about five minutes when connected to proprietary super-fast charging stations.
The introduction of Hongqi's battery technology could mark a significant shift in the electric vehicle market, potentially setting new standards for charging speed that competitors will need to address to keep pace.
