Fluffy AI Companions Provide Comfort to Isolated Children in Hospitals

In the pediatric ward at Jikei University Hospital in Tokyo, young patients who are required to spend extended periods in protective isolation rooms are receiving the companionship of small, fluffy Moflin robots. These adorable devices, which resemble hamsters or rabbits without ears, are part of an innovative trial. According to Kimihiko Oishi, a professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Jikei University, medical personnel are not always available to offer emotional support to these children. The introduction of Moflin is intended to provide a friendly presence for kids who have limited interaction with others, particularly during critical medical procedures such as bone marrow transplants. Oishi remarks, "This project aims to introduce a soothing presence in the hospital environment—something that goes beyond traditional medical care and may help alleviate those challenging moments." The AI-powered toy was created by the Japanese startup Vanguard Industries in partnership with Casio. It is designed to learn its owner's voice and touch over time, responding with endearing sounds and fostering a sense of connection.
