Exploring the Rise of AI Agents and the Deep Research Mode

Artificial Intelligence agents are more prevalent in our daily lives than many might realize, even if they are not aware of it yet. The capabilities of modern AI have evolved significantly, moving beyond simple hallucinations of non-existent facts to the reliable generation of real information.

Today's AI can engage in complex tasks such as navigating websites, extracting data, and drawing insightful logical conclusions. One of the standout features in the latest AI iterations is the Deep Research mode, a robust tool that allows users to deploy their own virtual research assistants capable of gathering and processing information without censorship or limitations.

Remember when ChatGPT 3.5 was the cutting edge? While it seems basic by today’s standards, back then, it marked a breakthrough. That model was known for confidently generating responses but often relied solely on its compressed knowledge base, leading to frequent inaccuracies. While it couldn’t accurately recount "War and Peace," it could summarize stories quickly. However, when faced with obscure topics, it might fabricate information based on context, demonstrating its propensity for what is called “hallucination.”

In contrast, asking the modern AI to count the letter "r" in the word "strawberry" or to solve mathematical problems showcases the impressive advancements made. Now, these models can generate scripts in Python, execute them, or produce regular expressions to derive correct outcomes, which reflect a shift from mere guessing to more predictable and algorithmically sound performance.

Modern AIs, such as Gemini, Claude, or the latest versions of ChatGPT, can connect to search engines to retrieve necessary information when faced with gaps in their training data. This capability marks the function of an AI agent effectively working in a cyclical manner to verify and refine its output.

The benefits of AI agents are often discussed in the context of coding; however, my focus is on advanced research functions like Deep Research. This functionality exists in various models—not only in the major four (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok)—but also in specialized services that prioritize such advanced searching capabilities.

Deep Research operates fundamentally on user queries, where the AI formulates the problem, breaks it into manageable steps, and iteratively searches the web for information. It reads and refines its action plan until it achieves a satisfactory level of accuracy. This marks the end of unreliable outputs; the results reflect the information available online.

In essence, Deep Research is a sophisticated algorithm that minimizes hallucinations, allowing users to obtain clearer and more reliable insights into a wide array of topics. This advancement signifies a potential shift in the market, highlighting the necessity for competitors to innovate continuously and adapt, lest they fall behind in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
