Concerns Over AI-Induced Cognitive Decline Emerge in New Survey

A recent survey conducted by Anthropic, which engaged over 80,000 users of its Claude bot, reveals that concerns regarding "cognitive atrophy" rank among the top fears related to artificial intelligence. Alongside worries about the reliability of bots, the economic impact of technology, and diminished personal agency due to AI, cognitive decline is a significant concern for many. Remarkably, this survey marks the first of its kind to be executed by AI itself.

"I received high marks using the responses provided by AI, rather than relying on what I actually learned. I ended up merely memorizing the information from AI, which fills me with self-doubt," shared a student from South Korea.

Interestingly, teachers are notably more aware of AI-related cognitive decline, with reports indicating they are 2.5 to 3 times more likely to observe this issue in their students. In contrast, blue-collar workers tend to express less concern about cognitive atrophy and are more inclined to believe that AI genuinely enhances their learning experiences.

Consequently, researchers suggest that while chatbots can be advantageous, they must be used with sincere intent rather than merely for superficial compliance. Are you concerned about cognitive decline linked to AI? — Yes, I'm starting to notice it — No, AI helps me!
