Researchers from Georgia State University have made significant strides in the fight against measles, testing a novel antiviral pill named GHP-88310. This experimental drug has proven effective in completely halting the spread of a measles-like virus among ferrets, including airborne transmission. The study utilized the canine distemper virus, which is closely related to the measles virus and causes a similar illness in ferrets. GHP-88310 works by inhibiting viral polymerase, an essential enzyme required for the virus's replication. The findings indicate the drug's effectiveness both before and after exposure, successfully preventing airborne transmission when administered preventively, alleviating disease severity, and shortening the contagious period in infected animals by five days. "This discovery is unprecedented for a viral polymerase inhibitor and showcases the remarkable antiviral strength of this medication," stated Carolin Lieber, the lead author of the study. The research team is now preparing for clinical trials to assess the safety and efficacy of GHP-88310 in humans. Measles continues to be one of the most contagious diseases globally, with insufficient vaccination rates contributing to the resurgence of significant outbreaks in various areas.
