WordPress 7.0 "Armstrong" Released with Major Enhancements

WordPress has officially launched version 7.0, named "Armstrong," which introduces significant updates to the popular content management system. Originally scheduled for release in April 2026, the launch was moved to May 20, 2026, to allow developers additional time to test the architectural changes through several release candidates.

This latest version includes over 419 fixes and modifications in Core Trac, which encompasses more than 300 bug fixes, alongside hundreds of enhancements in the editor, dashboard, and AI integration. A standout feature is the introduction of the WP AI Client, a unified PHP interface that allows plugins to connect with generative AI models without being tied to a specific provider. WordPress will manage the request routing, while connections to providers like Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI are available by default, with potential for further expansion by third-party developers.

Additionally, the new Abilities API has been integrated with the WP AI Client, enabling developers to describe the capabilities of their sites and plugins for use in automated workflows. The admin panel has received a facelift, featuring a new Modern color scheme, improved styles, and smoother transitions, which can be disabled for users who prefer reduced animations.

Another user-friendly enhancement is the Command Palette, accessible via a keyboard shortcut, allowing quicker navigation to actions and tools. Moreover, a dedicated Font Library page has been added for easier font management, while Visual Revisions in the editor now enable users to visually compare different versions of posts or pages.

The post editor has been upgraded for better stability by utilizing an isolated iframe mode, reducing the impact of theme styles and scripts. Mobile navigation has also been improved, allowing users to create custom overlay menus from blocks and patterns. Visibility settings for blocks can now be adjusted based on device type, enhancing responsive design capabilities.

Furthermore, new features include customizable CSS for individual blocks, PHP-only block registration, and enhancements to the Interactivity API. The minimum PHP version required has been raised to 7.4, with updates to various libraries ensuring improved performance and security.

WordPress 7.0 appears to lay a robust foundation for integrating AI tools, enhancing the admin interface, and refining the editing experience, all of which could significantly impact the market. As developers adapt to these changes, competitors may need to innovate rapidly to keep pace with the evolving landscape of content management systems.
