A 50-year-old woman named Angela Lipps from Tennessee found herself behind bars for half a year after authorities in Fargo, North Dakota, nearly 2,000 kilometers away, accused her of bank fraud based on an AI facial recognition error. Surveillance footage from a bank showed a woman using phony identification to withdraw substantial amounts of money. The AI incorrectly identified Lipps as the culprit, despite her having a solid alibi. "I've never been to North Dakota, and I don't know anyone from there," Lipps stated. Ultimately, after 5.5 months, Lipps regained her freedom when her attorney presented bank records that demonstrated her absence from the crime scene, a fact that the police had not bothered to verify. To make matters worse, the authorities offered no financial support for her return home and did not issue an apology. During her time in prison, Lipps lost her home, car, and beloved dog.
