Waypoint-1: Open-source Real-Time Game World Generator Launched

The startup Overworld, founded by members of the Stability AI research team, has released Waypoint-1 as an open-source project. This includes two models, 2.3B and 6.1B, designed to create interactive worlds based on text prompts. The team has also successfully raised $4.5 million in a pre-seed funding round. I tested it out, and overall, it resembles other real-time diffusion world generators available today. While it may not be revolutionary, the open-source aspect is a significant advantage. A standout feature is its performance: the smaller model can run on consumer GPUs, achieving 30 frames per second while generating in four steps, and up to 60 frames per second when generating in two steps at a resolution of 360p. Additionally, it's worth noting that the developers are offering $5 per hour for data collection by recording gameplay from various games using their specialized software.
