Unitree Robots Set to Outpace Usain Bolt by Summer 2026

Van Xinsin, founder of Unitree Technology, announced ambitious plans for the company's robots, asserting that by mid-2026, they are expected to run faster than humans in the 100-meter dash, potentially breaking the ten-second barrier and even surpassing Usain Bolt's record. Currently, these robots are not yet capable of outpacing humans, but advancements are on the horizon, particularly in China, where the development of robotic speed is a priority.

In a recent discussion about the future of embodied intelligence in AI models like ChatGPT, Van expressed that significant challenges remain. He identified three main issues: the first being the limited generalization abilities of AI models, which need improvement to enhance the expressive capabilities of humanoid robots. Secondly, there is a critical lack of data in robotics, necessitating better utilization of the currently available limited datasets. Lastly, he emphasized the need to strengthen the scaling effects in reinforcement learning.

While some are optimistic that these advancements could happen within 18 months, Van holds a more cautious view, estimating that it might take 2-3 years, though he acknowledges that progress could be rapid. Recently, Unitree's humanoid robots showcased their capabilities in a performance at Beijing's Temple of Heaven, hinting at the exciting potential that lies ahead. This advancement not only signals a competitive edge for Unitree but also poses significant challenges for other players in the robotics market as they strive to keep pace with these technological innovations.
