The Risks of Cooking with AI-Generated Recipes from Social Media

A recent exploration by journalist Mia Mercado revealed the pitfalls of following AI-generated recipes circulating on social media. Throughout a week-long challenge, Mercado attempted to create dishes that were often visually appealing but ultimately proved to be culinary disasters. One of her first attempts was a recipe for "garlic breadsticks," which combined cottage cheese, eggs, and mozzarella. While the video promised a crispy golden treat, the reality was a soggy, eggy mess that crumbled apart upon handling.

Further experiments yielded similar disappointing results; the "zucchini crackers" ended up burnt and mushy, and the "berry cheesecake," which was also made from cottage cheese, only resembled cheesecake from afar.

Interestingly, many AI-generated recipes tend to emphasize "healthy eating" by featuring ingredients like fat-free cottage cheese and making claims of high protein content, typically with minimal ingredients and the assurance that the final product will match the presented images.

The challenge, however, goes beyond poor taste. Many novice cooks may struggle to differentiate between a bizarre AI concoction and genuinely complex recipes. This confusion can lead to exploitation by those promoting these flawed cooking ideas.

Fortunately, the takeaway from Mercado's experiment is that AI has not yet mastered the art of cooking. For a successful meal, a human touch is still essential, as understanding how ingredients interact and the nuances of cooking remain crucial.
