A new startup, R3 Bio, is working on the ambitious goal of cultivating complete human-like organisms devoid of brains, intended as a source for blood, tissues, and potentially transplantable organs. Bojan Van, the CEO of the Immortal Dragons fund, which has backed this initiative, believes that these "bodyoids" could offer a more efficient alternative than attempting to repair entire human bodies. "If we can successfully create a human body that lacks a head and sensory perception, it might serve as a valuable resource for organ transplants," Van stated. The company's assertion is that these organisms would not possess consciousness or the capacity to experience pain, as the development of a brain would be absent. Currently, R3 Bio is keeping the specifics of their technological approach under wraps, though it is known that their research focuses on the interplay between stem cells and gene editing, with initial experiments conducted using monkey cells. Furthermore, these biological constructs could potentially replace monkeys in laboratory settings for pharmaceutical testing. This method may yield a more comprehensive understanding of biological systems compared to traditional models that utilize isolated tissues or organ-on-chip technologies, as the proposed organisms would encompass an entire interconnected system of organs and vessels. The ethical implications of creating human-like bodies without brains are being debated, with opinions divided on whether such advancements represent the future of medicine or pose significant moral concerns.
