Signs of AI Fatigue Emerge Among Russians, Says Psychologist

A growing sense of fatigue towards artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming evident among Russians, according to psychologist Elena Shpagina. As technology continues to integrate deeply into daily life, many individuals are experiencing what has been termed "AI Brain Fry," a state of mental exhaustion stemming from excessive interaction with AI systems. Shpagina explains that this trend can be attributed to cognitive overload and a loss of control, prompting users to seek alternatives away from AI-driven options.

Research shows that while over 80% of Russians support the development of AI, their trust in the technology has waned significantly. Users perceive AI as increasingly opaque and unpredictable. A recent survey revealed that while 61% of Russians express some level of trust in AI, that confidence diminishes dramatically in critical areas such as medicine and surgery, where trust levels drop to between 10% and 16%. This indicates a growing skepticism toward AI, suggesting that people are not outright rejecting the technology but are becoming more discerning as they weigh the risks involved.

Shpagina highlights that many employees are thrust into using AI tools without adequate training or understanding of their capabilities and limitations. This lack of clarity breeds anxiety and resistance, particularly as the pressure to use these tools grows. As a result, individuals may feel overwhelmed and exhausted, leading to a desire to disengage from AI altogether.

Signs of this fatigue can manifest in various ways. Shpagina identifies three key indicators that individuals should be aware of: rereading AI-generated responses due to distrust, experiencing unexplained fatigue after only a few minutes of interaction with AI, and a strong urge to revert to traditional search methods that do not involve AI.

To combat this fatigue, Shpagina suggests implementing an "AI detox" by consciously limiting AI use to specific tasks where it is genuinely beneficial. Users should also seek to regain control by disabling automatic AI responses in their apps and tools.

The implications of these findings are significant for the tech market and competitors. As user skepticism grows and the demand for greater transparency and control increases, companies will need to adapt their AI offerings to address these concerns to maintain user trust and engagement.
