Purdue University has announced that all incoming students will be required to complete a course in artificial intelligence. Students pursuing undergraduate degrees will have the opportunity to select an AI course that aligns with their specific field of study. For instance, those majoring in business may opt for "AI in Finance," while agronomy students might choose "AI in Agriculture." The institution has developed and revised numerous course modules to facilitate this initiative. The primary aim is to enhance AI literacy among students, encourage critical thinking regarding the technology, and better equip them for future employment. Senior Vice Provost Haley Oliver-Jischke emphasized, "We want Purdue graduates to acquire the skills necessary to lead AI systems, rather than allowing AI to take the lead." Although Purdue's initiative may appear ambitious, it reflects a growing trend in higher education. This year, the National University of Singapore also implemented a mandatory AI course for first-year students. However, some critics question the value of formal education in AI. Joe Vercellino, a former educator and author, remarked, "It would be akin to teaching a class on TikTok: everyone present is already far ahead."
