Over a Third of New Web Pages Created Since 2022 Feature AI Involvement

A significant finding from a Pew Research study reveals that more than one-third of web pages published since the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT have indications of artificial intelligence involvement in their creation. The research highlights a shift in content generation, with AI tools increasingly contributing to the material found on the internet. Analyzing nearly half a million web pages archived over the past five years, the study utilized the Common Crawl web archive to filter results specifically to pages published after ChatGPT’s debut in November 2022.

In a random sample of 10,000 web pages saved in July 2026, around 10% showed substantial signs of AI authorship. However, to ensure accuracy, Pew Research focused solely on pages released post-ChatGPT, where the AI authorship indicator rose to 35%. Notably, websites with a .com domain exhibited AI writing signs approximately ten times more frequently than those with .edu or .gov domains, which reported about 1% and 4.6% respectively for .org domains.

While the methodology may not be flawless, as tools like Open Pangram can yield false positives, the overall statistics from such a large sample seem credible. This trend underscores a growing reliance on AI in content creation, shaping the landscape of online material. The implications for the market are profound, as businesses may need to adapt to this increasing prevalence of AI-generated content, potentially reshaping competition and content strategies across various sectors.
