OpenAI to Introduce Visual Advertising in ChatGPT

OpenAI has announced the upcoming launch of a new visual advertising format in ChatGPT. This initiative will allow brands to display image-based ads while the AI generates pictures based on user requests. The testing phase is set to begin later this month in the United States, with an initial group of advertisers participating.

This new format aims to provide brands with enhanced opportunities to engage users by offering inspiration, demonstrating product usage, or conveying service experiences through advertisements. OpenAI has assured users that these ads will be clearly marked to prevent any confusion with the images generated by the AI. Importantly, the company reiterated that advertisers will not influence the responses provided by ChatGPT, ensuring the integrity of the service remains intact.

Users on the free plan and the affordable $8 monthly Go subscription will be the ones seeing these ads, while those on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans will experience an ad-free environment. Currently, ChatGPT boasts around 1.2 billion users weekly, with the majority accessing the free version, making this advertising strategy a significant revenue opportunity for OpenAI.

In conjunction with the new advertising format, OpenAI is expanding its tools for advertisers. They will be able to share customer purchase data through services like Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp, and assess the impact of ads on sales with partners such as AppsFlyer and Adjust. OpenAI is also collaborating with companies like Haus and Measured to explore how advertising influences sales across different regions.

Furthermore, the company outlined measures to prevent inappropriate ad placements. ChatGPT will have restrictions in place to avoid displaying ads during conversations on sensitive topics or when users are in vulnerable emotional states. Independent firms DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science will monitor the effectiveness of these safeguards through pilot checks in a controlled testing environment. OpenAI has emphasized that advertisers will not have access to users' private conversations.

This move into visual advertising could reshape the market landscape, offering new revenue streams for OpenAI while also intensifying competition among AI platforms to attract advertisers.
