OpenAI Retires GPT-5.5 from ChatGPT on October 14

OpenAI has announced that it will discontinue support for its GPT-5.5 model in ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex as of October 14, 2026. This change will affect all subscription tiers, including personal, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans.

For regular ChatGPT users, the transition to a new model will be automatic. However, developers who have built workflows around GPT-5.5 will need to review their settings in advance to ensure a smooth transition. This is particularly important for those using Codex through a ChatGPT account, as OpenAI advises users to switch from GPT-5.5 to the newer GPT-5.6 Sol model and to update their workspace settings, saved model parameters, managed configurations, custom agents, scheduled tasks, and scripts that reference the outdated model.

Developers utilizing the OpenAI API with a key will still be able to access the API without interruption, as the removal of GPT-5.5 from ChatGPT and Codex does not apply to the API. GPT-5.6 Sol is already available in ChatGPT, Codex, and the API, alongside other models such as Terra and Luna. OpenAI is also actively developing GPT-6 Astra.

The GPT-5 model was officially launched by OpenAI on April 23, 2026. This transition signifies a shift in the AI landscape, potentially impacting competitors as they adapt to new advancements and user preferences in AI technology.
