OpenAI has announced a significant price reduction for access to its GPT-5.6 Sol model, targeting developers, effective for the next three months. This comes as a follow-up to last month's price cuts on two other models within the GPT-5.6 series, where limits on usage were also expanded. According to reports, the price for accessing the Sol model will decrease by over 20%.
While the subscription costs for the Pro, Plus, and Business plans remain unchanged, developers utilizing the API will benefit from the new pricing structure. Clients of ChatGPT Work and Codex will now pay $4 for every million incoming tokens, with the cost for outgoing tokens reaching $20 per million under standard short context usage. Previously, these prices were set at $5 and $30, respectively.
In comparison, competitor Anthropic offers its flagship AI model, Claude Fable 5, at $10 per million incoming tokens and $50 for outgoing tokens, while its Claude Opus 5 model charges $5 and $25, respectively. The adjustments in pricing from AI developers are largely driven by increasing competition and the necessity to showcase positive revenue growth ahead of planned IPOs. While Anthropic is poised to enter the public market this fall, OpenAI appears willing to wait until next year for its own public offering.
This price reduction by OpenAI not only enhances its competitive edge in the crowded AI market but also reflects the ongoing pressure on AI companies to adjust their pricing strategies in response to market dynamics.
