OpenAI has made a significant move in the artificial intelligence market by launching its new models, GPT-6 Sol and Luna, at a strikingly lower price point than its competitors. The pricing for GPT-6 Sol is set at $2 for input and $10 for output per million tokens, while Luna is priced at a mere $0.10 for input and $0.50 for output. These prices represent a 50% reduction compared to promotional rates for GPT-5.6, and prompt caching now offers discounts of up to 90%, which are not reset when switching reasoning modes.
In terms of performance, GPT-6 Sol has outperformed Claude Opus 5 in a benchmark test called AutomationBench, scoring 33.2% at maximum settings compared to Opus 5's 26.9%, all while costing only $0.27 per task versus Opus 5's $3.00. Luna also showed improvement, gaining 5.4 percentage points from its predecessor while reducing task costs by 58%.
When it comes to coding capabilities, GPT-6 Sol matches Claude Fable 5.1 in a detailed evaluation on the FrontierCode benchmark but at a significantly lower cost. On the DeepSWE v1.1 benchmark for complex engineering tasks, Sol scored 68.8%, just behind Fable 5's 69.9%, but at an 80% lower task price. Notably, Luna achieved a score of 66.6%, comparable to Opus 5 and Fable 5 at mid-level efforts, while being 93% and 96% cheaper, respectively.
Both models demonstrate improved factual accuracy, with Sol making about half as many errors as GPT-5.6 and approaching Astra's performance at a lower cost. Luna, while competing with GPT-5.6 in terms of factual error rates, is available at a fraction of the price.
Infrastructure improvements have also been made, particularly for agents and long dialogues. GitHub reported that optimization efforts have led to a more than 50% reduction in the proportion of prompt tokens requiring full processing over billions of requests to OpenAI models. Developers now have access to a dashboard for monitoring caching, a tool for diagnosing missed opportunities, and clear stopping points for managing the length of cached prefixes.
The new GPT-6 Sol and Luna models are available starting today for users on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans, as well as through the API under the names gpt-6-sol and gpt-6-luna. This strategic pricing and enhanced performance could reshape the competitive landscape, compelling rivals to reassess their pricing and product offerings in light of OpenAI's advancements.
