Participants will structure their projects around specific stages, information management processes, and evaluation mechanisms. OpenAI has invited researchers with strong empirical skills and knowledge in labor economics, public finance, applied causal analysis, and regional development to take part.
The Economic Research Exchange represents a continuation of OpenAI's broader efforts to enhance the measurement of the economic consequences of AI technologies. Previously, the organization introduced OpenAI Signals, an analytical platform intended to assess how AI is being adopted and utilized across various countries and companies. By supporting a portfolio of independent research projects, OpenAI aims to expand the data available to researchers, policymakers, businesses, and the public amid rapid technological changes.
Proposals submitted to the program will be evaluated based on methodological rigor, feasibility, and their potential to create a credible evidence base regarding the impacts of new technologies. The application period will close on July 5, 2026, with the results of the selection process to be announced by July 31, 2026.
