New Sci-Fi Thriller "Mercy" Explores AI and Justice

Timur Bekmambetov's latest film, "Mercy," has made its global debut. Set in 2029, the storyline revolves around an AI system named Maddox, which serves as a prosecutor, defense attorney, and judge, significantly slashing crime rates in Los Angeles by having total access to individuals' data. The film's protagonist, a detective involved in the creation of this AI-driven justice system, is portrayed by Chris Pratt, known for his role as Peter Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy. He finds himself embroiled in a murder trial after being accused of killing his wife. With only 90 minutes to access case evidence—including video footage from cameras, telephone conversations, social media interactions, and cloud storage—he must convince the AI judge of his innocence to escape an immediate death sentence. Despite receiving harsh criticism, with a mere 24% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audience feedback has been notably more favorable, achieving an 82% approval rating from viewers. In its debut weekend, "Mercy" secured the top spot at the U.S. box office, ending the five-week reign of Avatar: Fire and Flesh. Will you be watching this film?
