New Organic Spray Rapidly Halts Severe Bleeding

Researchers from KAIST in South Korea have introduced a groundbreaking powder spray known as AGCL, which can quickly transform into a thick gel within just one second upon making contact with blood. This innovative product effectively stops bleeding and seals off even the most challenging deep and irregular wounds. The spray's effectiveness stems from a swift chemical reaction with the components of blood. Its unique formula combines two key ingredients: alginate, derived from brown seaweed, and gellan gum, which is produced through bacterial fermentation. When these two powders interact with blood, they almost immediately gel. Additionally, the third ingredient, chitosan, sourced from the shells of crustaceans and insects, as well as fungal cell walls, carries a positive charge. This property allows it to attract negatively charged red blood cells and platelets, facilitating their adhesion and forming a "plug" that effectively stops the bleeding. The spray is not only non-toxic but also possesses antibacterial qualities. Once applied, the resulting gel can absorb a volume of blood up to seven times its own weight, making it particularly valuable in situations involving significant blood loss.
