Increased Screen Time Linked to Improved Cognitive Skills in Teens

Research conducted by scientists in Finland suggests that greater screen time may enhance cognitive performance in teenagers. Over eight years, the study followed the development of 260 children, tracking their usage of electronic devices. By the conclusion of the research, the participants, whose average age was 15.8 years, underwent a series of assessments designed to evaluate their reaction times, attention spans, and working memory related to problem-solving. Findings indicated that those who spent more time engaged with screens exhibited improved cognitive skills. However, the study's lead researcher, Petri Jalanko, cautioned that correlation does not equate to causation. He emphasized that it's not merely the duration of screen time that holds significance but rather the nature of that engagement. Children who utilize gadgets for creative tasks, educational purposes, and problem-solving tend to gain more advantages than those who primarily consume passive content. Jalanko advocates for parents and educators to guide children in leveraging technology in ways that foster critical thinking, creativity, and learning. It is important to note that the children involved in this study were recruited between 2007 and 2009, and their screen time predominantly included television and computers rather than today's smartphones with constant content feeds. As the debate continues over whether gadgets are beneficial or detrimental to children, the findings suggest they can be helpful if used wisely.
