Sensay Island, a pioneering virtual micronation, has been established by British entrepreneur Dan Thomson, who is the mastermind behind the startup Sensay that specializes in creating digital replicas of historical figures. This unique micro-state spans 3.4 square kilometers and is situated in the western region of the Philippine archipelago. Governance on the island is managed by a council comprising 18 AI representations of notable historical personalities. Among its distinguished leaders, Confucius assumes the role of Minister of Education, while Leonardo da Vinci holds the position of Minister of Culture. The island's presidency is occupied by Marcus Aurelius, and Winston Churchill serves as the prime minister. Although Sensay Island has yet to receive recognition from any nation, over 12,000 individuals have expressed interest in obtaining digital residency. According to Thomson, many of these applicants are disenchanted with their current governments and are searching for a democratic alternative that is free from lobbyist influence and personal agendas. At present, the island is largely uninhabited, but plans are in place to welcome visitors soon. Would you place your trust in AI for governance?
