Beginning this academic year, students in Denmark's upper secondary schools will be mandated to orally defend their significant written assignments, known as SSO, completed at home. This decision was made by Magnus Heunicke, the country's education minister, who emphasized the need for measures to prevent artificial intelligence from eroding students' skills, academic integrity, and critical thinking capabilities. Furthermore, schools are encouraged to implement more in-class written assignments under supervised conditions, enabling teachers to monitor students' work processes, offer constructive feedback, and establish a more reliable foundation for assessments. Simultaneously, Denmark is trialing a policy that allows students at select upper secondary institutions to utilize AI tools while preparing for oral English exams. Although students can access generative AI and other resources during preparation, they must deliver their presentations in person before an examiner. According to the Danish Evaluation Institute, approximately 90% of upper secondary students currently use AI for their school tasks, with two-thirds admitting to having engaged in academic dishonesty using AI at least once.
