Cozystack Version 1.0 Launches with Major Architectural Overhaul and New Features

The highly anticipated release of Cozystack version 1.0 marks a significant transformation for the open-source platform, which enables users to build bare metal clouds for quick deployment of managed Kubernetes, database services, and virtual machines. The previous version, 0.41, has been transformed into 1.0 due to an accumulation of substantial changes. This upgrade introduces a new architectural model based on a package system similar to Debian/Ubuntu's apt, designed specifically for Kubernetes through the use of FluxCD and OCI artifacts. This shift allows users to "Build Your Own Platform" (BYOP), enhancing customization and flexibility.

Central to this new version is the cozystack-operator, which replaces the previous bash scripts that managed platform logic. This robust operator facilitates the installation of all system components, streamlining the deployment process. The platform now revolves around two key entities: Package and PackageSource. PackageSource indicates the source of the package, directly linking to a Git or OCI repository, while Package represents the user’s intention to install a specific package.

Cozystack can now be utilized in two main scenarios: as a ready-to-use platform with pre-installed applications, or as a customizable framework where users can select their desired packages. The installation process begins with the cozystack-operator, followed by the installation of the core package, cozystack-platform, with several installation options available.

Version 1.0 also introduces an advanced backup system using Velero, optimized API capabilities, and enhanced monitoring features. New database options, including MongoDB with auto-scaling and fault tolerance, are now available directly out of the box. However, users should note that support for FerretDB has been discontinued, and MySQL has been renamed to MariaDB.

With this release, Cozystack positions itself as a leader in the cloud infrastructure space, offering a robust and flexible platform that rivals competitors. Its architectural innovations and focus on user customization are likely to influence market dynamics significantly.
