Chinese artificial intelligence systems have reached performance levels comparable to Anthropic's powerful Mythos model in certain cybersecurity scenarios, as reported recently. Researchers indicate that the new AI model Z.ai from Zhipu A can compete with Mythos in vulnerability detection, although it still lags behind Anthropic and OpenAI's models in other tasks. The gap in capabilities between leading American and Chinese AI models has significantly narrowed, prompting companies like Microsoft to consider integrating Chinese models into their platforms. Lior Div, CEO of cybersecurity firm 7AI, remarked that China is making substantial efforts to minimize this gap over time. Unlike Anthropic or OpenAI's models, Zhipu's GLM-5.2 is open-source, allowing unrestricted use and modification, which presents potential risks for misuse by hackers. According to OpenRouter, which provides access to over 400 AI models, GLM-5.2 ranks among the top ten most frequently used models. In some performance tests, GLM-5.2 has outperformed Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8. Researchers believe that with further tuning, both models could match Mythos in bug detection capabilities. Recently, Chinese company 360 Security Technology launched a new vulnerability detection tool called Tulongfeng, claiming it rivals Mythos. This development has raised concerns among officials and leaders in national security. There is a belief in China that such powerful tools, capable of reshaping the cyber warfare landscape, should not remain exclusively in American hands. Meanwhile, U.S. authorities are working to restrict access to advanced domestic AI models under cybersecurity concerns. Just last week, OpenAI introduced its new family of language models, GPT-5.6, warning that access will be limited in accordance with a recent presidential directive aimed at enhancing oversight of AI development. The evolving landscape indicates a competitive race in AI capabilities, with significant implications for market dynamics and the strategies of competing firms.
