A biotechnology startup named Conception has announced a groundbreaking achievement: the creation of early human egg cells, referred to as primary oocytes, derived from stem cells that originated from reprogrammed blood cells. The process began by transforming blood cells into pluripotent stem cells, which were then utilized to cultivate miniature structures resembling ovaries. These structures facilitated the formation of follicles containing immature egg cells. This innovative technology holds potential for assisting individuals facing infertility challenges. In an ideal scenario, it may allow for the generation of eggs from a simple blood sample, thus removing the necessity for hormonal treatments and invasive egg retrieval procedures. However, it is important to note that, as of now, these cells are not yet capable of being fertilized. They require further maturation, and researchers must ensure that this process is safe and does not lead to genetic or chromosomal issues. Currently, the findings have only been shared through a company blog and have not undergone peer review or independent validation. A similar technique has previously been successful in mice. In 2016, a Japanese scientist named Katsuhiko Hayashi, who is now in partnership with Conception, demonstrated that adult mouse skin cells could be reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and subsequently developed into viable eggs. After fertilization, these eggs resulted in healthy offspring that were able to reproduce naturally.
