Brave Software has officially launched Brave Origin, a streamlined version of its popular internet browser. Brave, which is a Chromium-based browser founded by Brendan Eich, the creator of JavaScript and former CTO of Mozilla Corporation, has adopted an "open core" development model. While the source code for its Chromium patches is available on GitHub, the binary packages are compiled in a closed environment and include several proprietary features.
Brave Origin distinguishes itself by disabling all the proprietary functionalities found in the standard Brave browser. Users will find two types of builds available: one with features turned off in settings that can be re-enabled, and another where features are completely removed during compilation. This version also eliminates the collection of anonymous analytics and crash reports.
Among the features retained in Brave Origin are Shields, an integrated ad blocker, and Sync, which enables data synchronization across browsers without the need for an account. This sync operates similarly to Syncthing, utilizing a peer-to-peer mode where devices connect through QR codes to share data over a local network. The encrypted data is also backed up to Brave Software's servers.
Brave Origin is available for a one-time fee of $60 for users on macOS, Windows, Android, and iOS. However, Linux users can access it for free, with an option to donate to the developers. A provided script helps set up repositories for various Linux distributions, and others can download a portable zip archive from GitHub.
This launch reflects Brave's commitment to privacy and minimalism, which might appeal to users seeking a less intrusive browsing experience.
