Apple TV has just unveiled the first teaser for its upcoming series based on William Gibson's groundbreaking novel "Neuromancer." Released in 1984, this book played a pivotal role in shaping the cyberpunk genre. Gibson introduced the concept of "cyberspace" long before the internet became a common fixture in daily life, envisioning a future where hackers, powerful corporations, and artificial intelligence are integral to society.
"Neuromancer" also set the standard for the visual aesthetics of cyberpunk, featuring neon-drenched megacities, constant pollution, and impoverished urban areas where advanced technology collides with social decay. The novel’s iconic opening line—“The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel”—is still celebrated as one of the most memorable beginnings in science fiction literature.
The plot centers on Case, a talented hacker who, after being caught stealing from his employers, has his nervous system damaged as punishment, rendering him incapable of accessing cyberspace. A mysterious client appears, promising to restore his abilities in return for completing a perilous task, which leads to the revelation that this client is an AI with its own agenda.
The cast includes Callum Turner, Briana Middleton, Mark Strong, and Peter Sarsgaard. Executive producers for the series include William Gibson and Drake.
