Amazon is making a return to the smartphone market with the development of a new device called Transformer, marking a significant comeback more than a decade after the failure of its Fire Phone. First introduced in 2014, the Fire Phone was quickly discontinued due to poor sales and criticism over its functionality. The new Transformer aims to integrate artificial intelligence and features related to Alexa, focusing on a minimalist design that enhances user personalization.
The initiative is seen as part of a long-term vision by Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos, to create a voice assistant akin to the advanced computing systems depicted in science fiction, particularly "Star Trek." The Transformer will simplify tasks such as shopping on Amazon, streaming from Prime Video, and music listening, while potentially eliminating the need for traditional app stores.
This project is being developed by Amazon's newly formed ZeroOne team, which is dedicated to creating groundbreaking gadgets. Led by J Allard, a former Microsoft executive known for his work on the Zune and Xbox, the team is considering various device concepts, including a minimalist smartphone inspired by the Light Phone, which has gained traction for its limited functionality.
However, analysts suggest that Amazon faces a significant challenge in persuading consumers to switch from their current smartphones, especially given the strong market presence of Apple and Samsung, which together held about 40% of the global smartphone market last year. Additionally, the smartphone market is projected to experience a historic decline of 13% in 2026 due to rising memory chip costs.
The history of hardware with embedded AI is rife with unsuccessful attempts, such as the Humane AI pin. While many companies, including OpenAI and Apple, are exploring innovative devices that reduce reliance on traditional smartphones, the market’s response remains uncertain. For Amazon, this new venture could redefine its role in the smartphone ecosystem, but it will need to offer compelling reasons for consumers to consider switching from established brands.
