A developer named Gathin discovered that his parents' Xiaomi television displayed advertisements even before they could access Netflix. In response, he decided to leverage AI, specifically Claude Code, to tackle the issue. The AI connected to the TV via Wi-Fi and successfully disabled 25 unnecessary system packages, which included ad services and telemetry features. Additionally, it created a new home screen inspired by the Apple TV interface. Gathin transformed this project into CleanYourTV, an open-source initiative that has garnered significant attention on GitHub, receiving thousands of stars. To try this project, users can connect their Android TV or Google TV alongside their computer to the same Wi-Fi network, enable debugging mode on their TV, and input the project's prompt into Claude Code or another AI coding agent with terminal access. The AI will pose a few questions to understand user preferences, back up existing settings, deactivate unwanted software, and set up a cleaner home screen—all without requiring root access or a USB cable. Importantly, these changes can be reversed. Smart TV manufacturers may have reason to be concerned, as some of these devices utilize automatic content recognition (ACR) to monitor viewers by analyzing the audio and video content they consume. This data is vital for targeted advertising and audience analysis. If the trend of AI-driven TV optimization gains traction, it could disrupt a significant aspect of their revenue model. Would you consider trusting an AI agent with your TV's cleanup?
