AI Technology Developed to Identify Impaired Drivers by Analyzing Facial Expressions

A new computer vision system has been developed that can evaluate a driver's face through video footage to determine if they are under the influence, fatigued, or displaying aggressive behavior—factors often linked to traffic accidents. This innovative algorithm examines minute facial movements, expressions, blinking patterns, and other indicators that suggest a change in cognitive awareness. In trials, the system demonstrated approximately 87% accuracy in assessing various levels of intoxication and reached up to 95% accuracy in recognizing drowsiness. Although conventional blood tests and breathalyzers offer more exact measurements, they necessitate stopping the vehicle, can be time-consuming, and generally rely on the driver’s agreement. In contrast, a camera can monitor the driver continuously in real time. Looking ahead, these advanced cameras may eventually be integrated into cars directly from the production line. If a driver is found to be excessively tired or under the influence, the vehicle may be programmed not to start. Additionally, AI could also be incorporated into roadside cameras. Nonetheless, questions persist regarding how factors such as distance, reflections, and glare from windshields might impact their effectiveness. Would you be comfortable with AI assessing a driver's capability?
