Google has filed an application with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency seeking permission to release 64 million male mosquitoes infected with the bacterium Wolbachia in California and Florida. The goal of the Debug Project is to reduce the spread of mosquito-borne diseases such as West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis.
Similar approaches have already been tested in Yogyakarta, where areas treated with Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes saw a 77% reduction in dengue cases and an 86% reduction in hospitalizations. Comparable programs have also been launched in Australia, Brazil, Singapore, and China.
"I think it's interesting, but I'm not sure whether I would want them in my backyard because there are going to be a lot of things that go wrong. I'd rather have some other state to experiment on," Florida resident Brent Nye told reporters.
What do you think about the project?
❤️ — It's a smart idea that could save lives
🔥 — It's dangerous and irresponsible!
